Whose Kashmir!!!

September 18, 2010

I have been following the news on Kashmir for quite a time now and have watched several debates, read numerous articles and thus thought of writing my own views on it. In fact I just want to put forward few queries that I have regarding Kashmir and the issue connected with it.

To begin with I would like to say that any article on this topic is bound to be imperfect as it has got to do with the emotions and sentiments of so many people. I pray from the core of my heart that the Kashmir issue gets solved as soon as possible and no more innocent people should lose life. Along with this I pray that we rise above the issue of religion and region and think beyond. Life is beautiful; you just have to have an open mind to enjoy it.

So here goes my queries and I leave the answers to the readers’ comprehension and prudence. Fair enough?

  1. Who has stakes in Kashmir?  Is it only the people in Kashmir?
  2. Why is that the Jammu and the Ladakh region not protesting while the valley is?
  3. If at all we agree on Independence of Kashmir shouldn’t it be before asking all the Kashmiri Pandits to re occupy their lost lands and with all the temples which were destroyed in last 63 years be rebuilt? After all, weren’t they part of Kashmir before the independence?
  4. I have heard from few sections on media that the main cause of upheaval and the discontentment among the people is because the Kashmiri’s are not treated on par with other Indians in other states. But is this the real problem or is it that Kashmiri’s don’t want anything but Independence?
  5. Following the previous question if the reason is negligence then don’t you think the section 370 is doing nothing but adding to the misery of people? Shouldn’t they have exactly the same laws and rules as any other state? (Including, demilitarization, removing of AFSPA, free trade, tax, education, facilities, business establishment by people from outside the state, owning real estate etc.)
  6. If I have to believe that the only cause for the protest is seeking Independence then why is that the people in POK not seeking similar freedom, after all it was part of Kashmir? How come the thinking of people across the LOC is different, is the condition of people in POK better than what we have in Kashmir? This makes me think, had the Pakistan occupied all of the Kashmir, would there be similar protests for freedom then!!! ( I would love to hear YES)
  7. People are asking for demilitarization of Kashmir (including me, except on the borders), do you really think that the Army is enjoying their stay in the Kashmir rather being deployed at the borders, doing what they love to do that is guarding our country?
  8. If people don’t want men in uniform to guard 24X7 and if army doesn’t want to play the role of watchman, then who\what is forcing them to be present there?
  9. If the government says that Kashmir is an integral part of India, then why is that they don’t create an environment of free movement of people in and out of valley as we have between other Indian states? Why can not a person from other state not buy property of have stakes in industries there?
  10. What are the possibilities if the government agrees to the independence of Kashmir, other similar demands would creep up from other parts of the India? I dare say that for a long time the NE India has been totally ignored by the government of India and if people in other parts of India are demanding independence it is because of the apathy and insensitivity shown by our government and no one else.

Finally coming to my own views and my take on the possibilities in the future, we could have one of these conditions:

1. Independence of Kashmir: I am not saying that this should happen but if this ever happens, there should be few things that should happen along with it. First the POK should also be integrated with Kashmir and made independent, which I doubt would happen. Second as expressed in the views above, all the Kashmiri’s Pandits be allowed to retain there land and properties. All the temples demolished should be resurrected by the people who demolished it. They have as much as stake in Kashmir as Kashmiri’s Muslims. After all the King of J&K was himself a Hindu. Having said that, if the people from Jammu, Ladakh and POK don’t agree on an independent state then it would be hard job to come to any conclusion.

2. Leave the vicious circle of deaths, defiance and negligence as it has been for last 63 years: This could be the worse thing that can happen to Kashmir and its people. This would be nothing less than a slow poison which would ultimately annihilate the entire region if not the entire country.

3. Bring the people of Kashmir under confidence by providing all the freedom and rights enjoyed be any other Indian in any other state:  This according to me could be the best thing that should happen to Kashmir. The government I must say had lost the plot by being complacent after the election in the state where more that 60% of the people took part. Thinking of “aaal is well” was not the best of the Ideas. Since we don’t have the rewind button in our lives, we should be thinking of how well we can gain the confidence of the people.

4. Have a plebiscite and make each and every one from J&K, POK, COK(China Occupied Kashmir) to participate. According to the percentage of votes received for Independence or for India or for Pakistan, divide the area accordingly in that proportion: This should be the last resort. At least the people would think that justice has been done.

Having said all this, if any of the outcome forces even a single inch of Kashmir to be cut apart from the mainland India, it would be playing with the emotions of 100crore Indians who have grown learning Kashmir as an integral part of India, who take pride in the natural beauty of the land, who know Kashmir as the “Taj” of our country, who believe it to be among the most sacred places in the world and who just can’t see a part of theirs being cut away.

May we all have peace!!

Dog’s Life!!!

September 9, 2010

Dog’s Life

To start with this is not about the life of people in IT industry. It is indeed about the life of dogs. (No pun intended)

Today when my parents asked me to come with them to buy some FMCGs (Fast Moving Consumer Goods – Both Durables and Non Durables) from the Canteen, I was bit reluctant as I usually don’t like going out for these stuffs. Anyway I went with them coz I was told that I would be driving the Car, which I really love to do that too in this lovely weather. Nevertheless my dad drove the first half and it seemed that he wanted some one to be with him when he takes the car to the main road, I was the victim 🙂

But that was just the usual part of it. We reached Hamla in next 10mins or so. Ok, ok, ok I forgot to mention that my dad is an ex-navy, so he is liable to avail the canteen facilities provided by the Navy and Hamla is a Naval base here in Malad. After the formalities of registering our names, address and number at the main gate we proceeded towards the Canteen. For some reason, the car was not allowed inside the campus.

It’s quite a small canteen compared to others that I have seen in Navy, and that’s understandable as the population here too is comparatively less.

As we entered inside, it was quite depressing to see huge queue for the bill. About 25 people were ahead of us and no one behind. (Looks like CET question of quant like find the position where I am standing in the queue…..:)…ok ok that was a poor PJ). So 10mins in the canteen, I was screening through all the healthcare products available with them, and to my surprise I saw a very old acquaintance from my school (obviously not among the healthcare products) standing in the queue. I was seeing him after 8 years or so, he was my senior. We had nice little chat.

So all of you reading must be thinking where am I heading, where are the *&^$ing dogs!! Don’t worry they are on their way and remember *&^$ing is an integral part of this incident :).

So, now that my old friend was busy with all the FMCG products, Mom and Dad lost somewhere into some other section, perhaps in the agro based section where we get wheat, rice, pulses etc; I was alone and then I thought that standing idle in the queue is such a waste of time, so I came out of the canteen. Just behind the canteen was the seashore (this is the best part of Navy, seashore cannot be more that a km away, no matter where you are in the country and in this case it was hardly 25mts away, I mean just behind).

As I was standing on the embankment and the vast sea line in front of me, I was just lost in the moment. It was so relaxing to be at that serene place. As the place was a restricted area there was nobody around except for few securities and couple of officers for their evening walk, that too far away. But other than that there were no human, but hey there were around 4-5 similar looking creatures about 500mts away, and yes this story is inspired by them, they were our Indian dogs!!

What would kids do if they are left free, they would run around, jump, kick each other, fall, get up, run again, jump so on until they get tired and sleep. The dogs were doing the same thing. Through the lovely monsoon breeze and light drizzle I stood there watching them carefully. I just love to watch animals or for that matter people (pun unintended) when they are not watching me.

As I was watching them (from quite a distance) suddenly four of the dogs (one black, one brown, and two in white-black shade) started running as if in a competition, believe me, they were real fast. We don’t get to see the dogs run that fast for that long in the main city but here they didn’t had to fear the humans or anyone else and the entire stretch of the shore was theirs. After running for a km or so one of them (the brown one) kept on running (he was also the fastest) and the other three stopped and started playing with each other, jumping on each other, harmlessly biting etc. And then there was another dog a black one, just behind me watching those dogs running and also watching me. I guess he would have published his own version of blog – Human’s Life!! Anyway, I diverted my attention to this dog and saw a fear in him coz he was hesitant to come close as he was standing few meters away, I just made sound of aa…aaaa…aaaaa, and in no time he came right in front of me wagging his tail to the extremes. He was free from any fear that he previously had and now he was just moving around me and then sat there enjoying the lovely weather.

Standing beside him I took my attention back to the sprinters, I realized that the brown dog who just kept on running had disappeared, may be reached another beach for some hot bitch! Another thing that I realized was that the black dog was a female one and other two in white-black shades were definitely male and perhaps brothers. Now started the real “raas-leela” as one the male dog started getting cosy with the female one, trying to jump from the behind (you know for what!), but the female was lady with substance, she didn’t yield to his demand. The male dog kept on getting close to where it matters and this black dog kept on denying him. Things got interesting when the other dog (white-black shade) too started getting cosy with the lady and there is no prize for guessing that this pissed off the other male dog who now became quite aggressive. Since they all were friends (I am sure they were) the little spat between the two male dogs never took an ugly turn but each of the male dog were trying to impress the female by howling at each other trying to bring other down to the ground but neither of them cheated by biting, it was a fair game. The lady dog was nicely enjoying the “bhaav” she was getting from the two males, she was just going round each of them but never let any one of them to come too close to her. This got me wondering if she knew that the dog that was sitting beside me and watching all this was from “emotional atyaachaar” and spying on her at behest of her BF\Husband.

Then something happened that made me laugh out loud at the two male dogs. During the fight to show their supremacy the dogs often barked at each other. Now hearing their barks, there came another dog (a brown one) from nowhere. This one was not the same dog which kept on running and perhaps is still running (Mr Bolt). This one was quite big in size and looked stronger than all of them. He came from behind me and saw the scene between the three dogs and ran furiously towards the site, I thought he was another of a despo but that was not the case. Watching this dog approaching, the two male dogs stopped fighting and took 5-10 steps behind and stood motionless. Even more surprising was, when this lady dog ran towards this brown dog as if a wife explaining his husband about the hooligans who were trying to take advantage of her being alone that too in that lovely weather. Now the two male dogs were absolute quite not saying a word, this macho brown dog went to each of the other male dog and howled at them, both the male dogs were hiding their tale below their butts (which is a sign of surrender). I was expecting real fight between them but nothing happened, he just growled at each of the dogs, and they were already on to the ground. Anyway by looking at the two black-white dogs it never seemed like they are in for any contest. This brown dog then went behind his lady black dog, smelled her behind, confirmed that she is pure and then the couple sat beside each other. The other two too sat but at a distance from the couple (respect see, even they respect the privacy of the couples, or rather don’t have any other choice).  I was really laughing at this incident.

To my surprise there was another stranger incident still to happen. Just before I realized that I have kept my FMCG products in the queue for the bill and thought of leaving the scene at that point, I heard a loud hooter which went on for about 2mins or so and to my amusement all the four dogs at the scene (dog beside me had left by now, perhaps to spy on some one else) stood and started howling loud in UNISON! Just like the way wolves do. I was taken aback as they usually do it when they cry and something bad happens. Anyway I left that place, cool breeze had just picked up the speed and grey clouds had intensified and night almost approaching.

As soon a reached the canteen I saw my Mom and Dad coming out of it, they had just finished with the billing (that is what I call Just in time). We reached the main gate of Hamla and there we also came to know that the hooter that had sounded few minutes back was actually for a fire drill!!

At last I just would like to say that the peace that I found today amid the cool breeze flowing from the south-west, that tiny little droplets falling from the grey sky, the sound of the waves splashing the rocks, the breath of pure air, and yes the strange but lovely life of the dogs, perhaps can not be equated with any other thing in the world. It was unique; actually we do come across these kinds of incidents very often but are too busy to observe them.

So next time when you say that you are leading a Dog’s Life…think again!!!
